Character - In a role-playing game, a character referred to in much the same way as a character in a play or a movie. It is a persona with its own characteristics, motivations, skills, etc. A character can either be controlled by one of the players or a GameMaster.

d4, d6, d8, d12, etc. - A shorthand term indicating how many sides a die has. Often the number of such dice to be rolled appears at the beginning. I.e.: 3d8 indicates rolling three 8-sided dice.

DM - DungeonMaster. In a role-playing game, the DM is the one in charge of directing the story and playing the part of the non-player characters the players interact with. More commonly referred to as a GM, or GameMaster.

Graphic Novel - Quite simply, a novel with graphics or images. Graphic novels are much like comic books with a panel presentation and text within the image panels. Several pieces of classic literature are available as graphic novels.

GM - GameMaster. In a role-playing game, the GM is the one in charge of directing the story and playing the part of the non-player characters the players interact with. Sometimes referred to as a DM, or DungeonMaster.

NPC - Non-Player Character. In a role-playing game, the GameMaster plays the part of characters the players interact with as they go through the story. Any character that is not controlled by a player is called a non-player character.

PC - Player Character. In a role-playing game, PCs are controlled by the players as opposed to being controlled by the GM. For more information, see "Character," above.
